ORENDA 0092 - Towers | Atticus Reynolds

Atticus Reynolds is a Los Angeles based drummer, composer, and producer working under the moniker goldenfinch. With a devotion to musical collage, his work demonstrates foundational experience as an improvising drummer in jazz and extended musical worlds, training in contemporary classical composition, and studies in latin and Afro-Cuban religious music.

He received his bachelor’s degree in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2017, he was selected as a participant in the Banff International Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music. He is currently pursuing a PhD in improvisation, composition, and technology at University of California at Irvine and studies with Kojiro Umezaki, Chris Dobrian, Lukas Ligeti, Mari Kimura, Michael Dessen, and Eric Revis. Reynolds has spent extensive time in Puerto Rico studying folkloric Afro-Puerto Rican music, as well as Batá drumming in the Lucumí tradition.

Reynolds’ debut release as a bandleader, entitled Ventana, was recorded in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 2016. This record of all original compositions by Reynolds fused jazz, contemporary classical, and Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric styles. Towers, slotted for release on Orenda Records in 2021, will be his follow up record with a band of young LA jazz heavyweights. He has recently composed the score for Jehbreal Jackson’s cinematic ballet CANON and is soon to release a collection of pop/electronic music as goldenfinch.
